This one is pretty obvious. The original version really does a good job of settting the tone, and without access to any fat monophonic sounds or Minimoog pitch envelope dives, I was never going to recreate it. So instead I added a little digital sparkle, some random pitched computer beeps and thickened up the low end.
Another thing I didn’t have was a vocoder, so there was no way to properly modify the announcement. What I did have was Microsoft’s SAPI 1 text-to-speech engine. Capturing the output, chopping it into phonemes and mix-pasting it was all done in Cool Edit, along with some sonic blurring of the words “Disneyland” and “Main Street” in the source material.
It still bugs me that I could never get “sparkling lights” to sound right. But, I guess “sparkuhlee lights” is probably fine.
